A little review of a little book.
The Resurrection: Fact or Fiction? Answers to Common Questions About Jesus’ Death and Resurrection by Richard Bewes
This seemed in several ways a fitting book both for a quick study this morning and to reawaken the book reviews portion of this site:
- It’s a collection of answers to common questions about Jesus’ death and resurrection and of why believers can trust them to be true.
- It’s very brief, taking only about half an hour to read this morning.
- It had long sat here unused.
That last reason is a bit playful, but the other two reasons may offer merit to Christians interested in sharing their faith or non-Christians curious about it.
For either group, any book this short is really only an introduction or reminder. Bewes wrote the book to be accessible and comfortable rather than scholarly, using a conversational tone peppered with narrative anecdotes and rhetorical questions. He discusses common questions and objections, such as whether Jesus’ friends or enemies stole his body instead of him being resurrected. Helpfully, the last page provides Bible references for the book’s main points and sections.
This book is unlikely to change anyone’s beliefs, but it serves its intended role well enough. Christians may find it a handy-enough review or starting point, while non-Christians may find it a brief-enough overview suitable to courtesy toward friends or family. True study would require a larger book with more depth and detail (and there are many, many excellent options from various perspectives), but this could help people decide whether they are interested in spending that time.
